Product description

Up for sale is this true vintage and fully original Fender Custom Esquire from 1960.

The guitar is in great shape. The original frets are fine, there is no major damage that would negatively impact playing and it comes with its original ash tray and hardshell case.

The guitar features a beautifully worn three-color sunburst double-bound alder body, a three-ply greenish celluloid pickguard, and a maple neck with a dark rosewood “slab” fretboard.

We are selling this guitar on behalf of one of our customers, who has had it for decades. We have opened up the instrument to check its condition and originality, other than that we have left it alone. To be honest, we think it doesn't need much more than a fresh set of strings: it feels just perfect, with its comfortable, fairly slim neck, low action and lightweight body. It's good to go for years to come!

Quirky detail: we noticed that the hole for one of the control plate's screws is actually on the edge of the control cavity. This can only be seen while the cavity has been opened. This has been like this since the beginning and fortunately the screw has enough grip to firmly hold down the control plate.

Something about the history of the model:

The Esquire was introduced in 1950 as Fender’s first standard electric solidbody guitar. It had one pickup in the bridge position, but with a body routing under the pickguard to provide the option of an added neck pickup. The Esquire remained in production as the more affordable alternative to the two-pickup guitar, that eventually became known as the Telecaster. The more refined looking Custom Esquire (and its Tele counterpart) was introduced in 1959. It featured a rosewood fretboard and a bound sunburst body. Both the Esquire and Esquire Custom were discontinued by 1970.

This 1960 Custom Esquire features a maple neck with a thick slab rosewood fretboard, which is common for these guitars from 1959 into 1962. After this period, the slab board was replaced by a thinner round-lam board. The headstock decal uses a gold Fender spaghetti logo with “Custom Esquire” in small black lettering.
